Immersive technology guides

Immersive installations combine content, rendering, optics and sound. A useful diagnosis starts by identifying which part of that chain controls the result you see. These guides explain the principles and link to practical TholusOS workflows where appropriate.

The shape of a video frame does not tell you how its pixels should be projected. Domemaster, equirectangular and ordinary flat video use different coordinate systems. Choosing the correct interpretation prevents stretching, unexpected cropping and misplaced content before calibration begins.

Read the fulldome and 360° format guide for orientation, field of view and examples of how a source reaches the audience surface.

For an incoming file, use the video delivery checklist to record encoding, timing, audio and storage needs, then test playback on the target system.

Two projectors lighting the same area add light. Edge blending progressively reduces each projector’s contribution so the overlap approaches the surrounding brightness. Good geometric alignment comes first; a brightness mask cannot align objects that appear in two different positions.

Read the edge-blending explanation for the relationship between overlap, geometry, gamma and colour. The article includes a practical adjustment order and explains when an optical or installation change is needed.

A projector still emits some light when showing digital black. Overlapping black areas can therefore look brighter than areas illuminated by one projector. Black-level compensation balances that difference by raising other areas, which reduces usable contrast.

Read the black-level guide before adjusting dark scenes. It separates digital compensation from the optical and environmental factors that establish the room’s black floor.

Check content on a preview, then rehearse it on the intended outputs. A physical commissioning pass checks geometry, focus, overlap, dark and bright scenes, sound and audience visibility together.

Follow TholusOS projector calibration for the app workflow or media playback to prepare a source and control room output.
